The inland waterways industry is at a crossroads to give its future a new twist. Both internal and external challenges play an important role in this. Innovation and digitization are hereby linked to new products, services and business operations.
De Vlaamse Waterweg is joining forces with EY to help shape the future of Smart Shipping with highly targeted and innovative solutions. Future-proof innovations regarding internal organization, new services or products and business models will form the basis of this Hackaton.
During 48 hours teams of startups, scale-ups, corporates, and students will have the opportunity to collaborate and create digital and innovative solutions relevant for the Smart Shipping Industry. A diverse and dedicated team of experts and coaches will assist you during the process. After the hacking, you will have to present your suggestion to a mixed jury of experts.

Who are we looking for?
For this hackathon, we are looking for startups, scale-ups, established organizations, developers, students, experts, ... who want to grab the opportunity to contribute to the future of Smart Shipping. All sector stakeholders are invited to contribute to the sector’s most pressing challenges you will find below!
The Challenges
We are specifically looking for teams that can hack together innovative and disruptive solutions in one of the following areas:
How are automated barges able to safely navigate the inland waterways
- Challenge 1: Crewless lock passage
How is an automated barge able to safely pass through a lock when no persons are present on the barge to handle the mooring lines?
- Challenge 2: Data protocols
Which communication protocols should be implemented to enable safe navigation with automated and conventional barges?
How will the government operate its waterways to support both manned and unmanned navigation?
- Challenge 3: Corridor management
How to enable corridor planning for both automated and conventional barges?
- Challenge 4: Operations of the future
How should the government incorporate new technologies and organise their operations towards optimal traffic management?

Therefore this workshop is part of our EYnovation program execution for VLAIO and is as such open to all Flanders-registered start-ups.
